Burton to subpoena White House over use of visitor list by first lady's campaign

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Congressman Dan Burton, chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, will issue another subpoena to the White House on Monday as part of an investigation into the use of a White House visitors list by the first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's Senate campaign.

Clinton's campaign has admitted obtaining the names of 1,400 White House visitors and soliciting them for campaign contributions, but says the list was obtained inadvertently because it was mixed up with other political lists provided by the Democratic National Committee.

The first lady is locked in a heated battle with Republican Rep. Rick Lazio for New York's Senate seat now held by retiring Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

The issue came to light because a number of journalists who had been invited to Christmas parties at the White House received the fund-raising letters from Clinton's New York campaign. The Democratic National Committee pays for such holiday parties at the White House.

Burton, R-Indiana, has been investigating use of official White House resources for fund-raising purposes.

The newest subpoena will ask for all documents and records related to the transfer of the visitor list, as well as any other White House list that may have been transferred to a political campaign.

The subpoena also seeks all records dealing with overnight visitors who stayed at Camp David or in the Lincoln Bedroom. The White House has made public a list of overnight visitors, but did not list the dates of the sleepovers or other details.
