TRAVEL TIPS |
| Bring plenty of raingear and warm clothes. Temperatures on a "hot" summer day are in the high 50s -- anything as high as 65 is part of island lore.
|
| Take a bike ride. St. Paul would be a fabulous place to ride mountain bikes, although you're not allowed to pitch a tent anywhere in the tundra. |
| Seek out scientists. Every couple of years, scientists and local Aleuts gather several newborn pups to be weighed, measured and marked, then returned to their mothers. There are limited openings for volunteers who want to help.
|
| Build in a reasonable amount of flexibility on either side of your itinerary. There are only four flights a week to St. Paul, and they can be delayed or canceled by heavy fog or high winds. |
| Do some research. There are a few books about the history of the Pribilofs; one of the most interesting is Slaves of the Harvest (1978), by Barbara Boyle Torrey.
