 • Large numbers of U.S. transports have been reported landing and taking off at Khanabad, a former Soviet airbase about 100 miles north of the Afghan border.

 • Reports from the Pentagon suggest U.S. Air Force special operations forces will operate from Khanabad, with a recent U.S.-Uzbekistan agreement leaving the door open for offensive strikes to be launched from this area.
