The Number of Women Firefighters in Iran Is Growing

ASIEH NAMDAR, CNN ANCHOR: Slowly by surely, traditional roles for women in Iran may be changing. Women are not only pursuing a career in teaching or nursing anymore.

SHIHAB RATTANSI, CNN ANCHOR: Iran's IARB talked to some who are training for a dangerous profession traditionally associated with men.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

APROOZE ISLAMI, IARB CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Iran, the oil and gas-rich country is located on quake belt. In fact, existence of large faults, possibility of earthquake and, consequently, outbreak of fire in gas pipelines in cities has necessitated public alert and educate for dealing with such events.

Women and young girls have gathered here to learn life a life- saving, but highly risky profession.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE (on screen): You should see everywhere with your eyes and analyze it in your mind.

ISLAMI: Most of them are students and in their 20s. Despite the dangerous nature of the job, they are learning it out of compassion so that, as aid worker to rush for the help of their fellow citizens, especially their own gender.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (on screen): Realizing the responsibility of a firefighter, I became more interested in this profession.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (on screen): During the training period, I witnessed the courage and boldness of all my colleagues and I think I myself have the same courage.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (on screen): I believe women should undergo the same training as well.

ISLAMI (on camera) (on screen): Well done! How did you feel as you come down?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (on screen): Nothing special.

ISLAMI (on screen): Were you frightened?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE (on screen): No, I'm glad to have taken up this job and prove that there are women who have the pluck to handle this task.

ISLAMI (voice-over): In large cities, training facilities are already available for men and women to become aid workers to avoid any shortcomings in emergency case.
